A SAFETY NET IN THE EVENT OF JOB LOSS

If you are unemployed, you are entitled to employment insurance benefits. Two conditions are necessary to be eligible:

  • Be unemployed for a period of 7 consecutive days;
  • Have accumulated between 420 and 700 insurable hours over a period of 52 weeks. The number of eligible hours is determined by your place of residence and the regional unemployment rate.

RELEVANT INFORMATION ON EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE

  • To speed up the processing of your application, we recommend you keep your employment insurance application active at all times;
  • Your record of employment is required to process your employment insurance application. Your employer issue it within 5 calendar days of the interruption of earnings. They can also send it electronically. In this case, you will be able to view it on the Service Canada website, under the My Service Canada Account tab;
  • You must complete an application for employment insurance within 3 weeks of your last work day;
  • Once your request has been accepted, a “waiting period” must be served, during which no benefit is paid, and you will have to wait another 4 weeks before the first payment is received.
