Two of the attractive subsidies available to the majority of apprentices in the industry will end on March 31, 2025.
The federal government has decided to abolish the following two grants:
- AIG (Apprenticeship Incentive Grant): This grant enabled apprentices in Red Seal* trades to obtain an annual taxable amount of $1,000 for the first two renewals of their regular apprentice competency certificate.
- ACG (Apprenticeship Completion Grant): This grant amount of $2,000 per person was given to registered apprentices who have obtained their journeyperson certification in a specialized Red Seal trade.
Workers interested in obtaining these subsidies must apply before March 31, 2025, after which date applications will no longer be accepted. Deadline for submitting supporting documents is 12 months from your application date.
How do I apply for the AIG?
To be eligible, you must have a regular apprentice competency certificate and meet the following conditions:
- Your certificate has been renewed:
- Once, with at least 150 hours worked between issue and renewal,
- Twice, with at least 250 hours worked between the first and second renewals.
- If you have not graduated, you must have successfully completed a mandatory course, identified in the directory by an asterisk or a tool symbol, for each calendar year.
You must submit your application within 12 months of your renewal date. You can find that date on the letter you received from the CCQ.
How do I apply for the ACG?
You can apply for the ACG if you have a regular apprentice competency certificate in a designated Red Seal construction trade and meet these conditions:
- You must have completed your qualification exam and have obtained your journeyperson competency certificate.
But be aware!
If you obtained your journeyperson certificate of competency through recognition of work experience, you must have submitted work hours to the CCQ according to these percentages:
- 55% for a trade with a single apprenticeship period,
- 60% for a trade with multiple apprenticeship periods.
Deadline for submitting your application is 12 months after having completed your training and obtained your journeyperson competency certificate.
* All construction trades, except elevator mechanics, are designated Red Seal.
