Your neighbour\u2019s basement is flooded\u2013two feet of water and counting. Think their insurer will cover the damage? Maybe it all comes down to the coverage they added (or not) to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beneva.ca\/en\/blog\/house-and-home\/home-insurance-questions-answers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home insurance policy<\/a> to protect themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What your home insurance actually covers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A standard home insurance policy protects you against some types of water damage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A leaking toilet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An overflowing bathtub<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A leaking washing machine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not everything is included by default. Some types of risks require additional coverage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sewer backups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water seepage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If heavy rain seeps in through your roof, you may be eligible for compensation if you took out \u201cWater damage\u2013Above ground water\u201d coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If flooding happens in Quebec<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don\u2019t have the necessary coverage\u2013or if your policy doesn\u2019t fully cover your losses\u2013you may be able to get support through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/public-safety-emergencies\/emergency-situations-disasters-and-natural-hazards\/financial-assistance-and-compensation-flooding-or-disaster\/financial-assistance-compensation-property-owners-tenants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Financial Assistance Program Regarding Disasters<\/a>. Other assistance measures are available depending on the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to check your policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Call your insurer to review your exclusions, endorsements and benefit amounts.<br>Confirm your coverage amounts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can\u2019t control the weather, but you can be prepared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean your gutters and window wells<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the seal of your doors and windows<br>with a garden hose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure downspouts direct water away<br>from your home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjust the slope of your yard if needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep flood barriers
