{"id":296273,"date":"2024-04-15T13:38:25","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T17:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csdconstruction.qc.ca\/?p=296273"},"modified":"2024-08-01T10:14:22","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T14:14:22","slug":"decontaminate-or-clean-up-crystalline-silica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csdconstruction.qc.ca\/en\/2024\/04\/15\/decontaminate-or-clean-up-crystalline-silica\/","title":{"rendered":"Decontaminate or Clean up Crystalline Silica?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Understanding the difference between <strong>decontaminating <\/strong>and <strong>cleaning<\/strong> is crucial when it comes to crystalline silica dust and work site cleanliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Silica area to be decontaminated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An area that has been contaminated by fine crystalline silica dust from concrete, brick, ceramic, granite, sandstone, mortar, etc.* is to be decontaminated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we speak of <strong>fine dust<\/strong>, we\u2019re talking about airborne dust, generally created by a mechanical tool. That includes any place where sawing, grinding, sanding, bush-hammering, jackhammering, drilling or boring is being carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area contaminated by fine dust must be marked out ahead of time. It can then be decontaminated. Decontamination is a wet process, with sufficient water added to abate the dust, <strong>or<\/strong> uses a vacuum cleaner fitted with a high-efficiency filter. What you need to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use of a broom and sweeping powder to decontaminate a work area is prohibited.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A worker assigned to a decontamination task must have been informed of the risks and preventive measures to be applied beforehand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Area to be cleaned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the crystalline silica source is under control, the work area outside the delimited zone can be <strong>cleaned <\/strong>rather than decontaminated. The contractor and the employer must therefore contain the crystalline silica dust to limit the size of the work area to be decontaminated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What should I do if my work site is at risk?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel that your employer is not complying with these rules, you should file a complaint with the CNESST. Your union representative can help you through this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of the rules are not followed, the CNESST will stop the work on the site and those at fault will be liable for criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CSD Construction actively participates in regulatory work regarding the Safety Code for the Construction Industry (CSTC) and the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety (RSST).
